The story

Alleria in Exmouth: A Local Gem for Wood-Fired Pies and Simple Mediterranean Cooking

The room and the setting

Alleria brings a relaxed Mediterranean cooking style to dining at the top of Exmouth High Street. Behind a sunshine-yellow frontage, the compact room keeps its focus squarely on wood-fired preparation and quiet conversation. The Good Food Guide named it a Local Gem for 2026, recognizing how the layout lets the oven do most of the talking. Guests settle into a narrow window seat while dough rises slowly in the background.

The dough and the cooking method

These Mediterranean-style pies maintain a paper-thin centre and puff into charred rims at the edge. Kitchen staff spread bright San Marzano passata and fresh mozzarella before adding generous layers of seasonal produce. The Dude piles spicy 'nduja, diced chorizo, sharp Gorgonzola, and hot chilli under a heavy mound of rocket. Another selection, the Vivaldi, balances cured ham with marinated artichokes, earthy mushrooms, and briny olives.

Plates and sweet finishes

Visitors frequently order chilled marinated anchovies while they wait for their main course to finish baking. The menu concludes with simple finishes like silky tiramisu or a classic affogato poured over sweet cream. A deliberately short drinks list highlights regional selections, including a dependable IGT red from Campania to complement heavier slices. This measured approach keeps the Mediterranean table turning efficiently during peak service hours.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Behind its sunshine-yellow frontage at the top end of the High Street, Alleria brings real Italian verismo to the business of constructing pizzas that you won't forget in a hurry. Paper-thin in the centre, with risen, puffy, blackened perimeters, they are daubed with fantastic San Marzano passata, creamy mozzarella, and whatever else you can handle. We tried the Dude, a hulking convocation of 'nduja, diced chorizo, pungent Gorgonzola and searing red chilli under an enormous clump of rocket. Heaven. Or try the Vivaldi, with ham, artichokes, mushrooms and olives. Nibble a few marinated anchovies while you wait, and round off with tiramisu or affogato. A tiny drinks list includes a more than passable IGT red from Campania.
