The story
Just thirty minutes from Edinburgh, on Gullane’s Main Street, La Potinière is an intimate restaurant owned by award-winning chefs Keith Marley and Mary Runciman. The restaurant has earned a Michelin recommendation, a fitting recognition for a kitchen that has quietly become one of the finest in East Lothian.
The menu changes regularly, shaped by what is best in any given season. Keith and Mary source ingredients locally and nationally, and are founder members of the Scotch Beef Club. They also grow produce in the restaurant’s own garden, giving them direct control over the quality and freshness that defines their classic cuisine.
Everything is prepared in-house, from the bread to the desserts. Keith Marley’s skill in patisserie has been recognised with the CIS Excellence Awards Patisserie Chef of the Year, an award that required him to demonstrate outstanding technical ability, a deep knowledge of pastry, chocolate and sugar work, and a reputation for imaginative, exquisite creations. That precision carries through to every course.
The atmosphere is warm, friendly and relaxed. The dining room seats around twenty guests, and the service is personal – often Keith himself will bring dishes to the table. There is no background music; the appreciative chatter of diners provides the soundtrack. The short, carefully considered menu typically offers two choices per course, and the wine list is compact but well-chosen.
Dishes have included a beetroot and goat’s cheese salad on a crisp pastry base, a Thai coconut soup with perfectly poached scallops, and a sliced loin of venison with a celeriac-topped ‘poacher’s pie’. Desserts are a highlight: a pear caramel with walnut sauce and an intense pear sorbet, or a rich chocolate pudding. Everything is presented with care and balance.
Private parking and wheelchair-accessible facilities are available. The restaurant asks about dietary requirements at the time of booking and is happy to accommodate allergies and intolerances.
La Potinière is open for lunch Thursday through Sunday, and for dinner Thursday through Saturday. Bookings are confirmed by telephone.
