The story
At FIFTY TWO in Harrogate, the dining room is built around a single idea: food as theatre. Guests are seated at five tables arranged for social seating, each offering a prime view of the open kitchen. There is no printed menu. Instead, you place your trust in chef and host Adam, who designs each meal around what is ready in the kitchen garden that day.
The kitchen garden is not a garnish – it is the engine of the kitchen. Head Kitchen Gardener Emma Pugh and her team grow over 500 different edible plants using organic, no-dig methods. The produce moves from bed to plate with minimal distance, and the flavours change with the season. If the weather allows, guests are invited to walk through the garden before dining, a chance to see exactly where their meal began.
Adam’s path to opening FIFTY TWO began by accident – a missed train at 16 led to a dishwashing job, and he never left the kitchen. He cooked at Wild Honey and Chiltern Firehouse in London before moving to Yorkshire. As Head Chef at Horto at Rudding Park, he earned three AA Rosettes and an appearance on Great British Menu. In May 2024, he opened FIFTY TWO. Less than two years later, it became Harrogate’s first Michelin-starred restaurant – the guide now lists it as Recommended for 2026.
The experience unfolds as a series of dishes: snacks, freshly baked bread, a progression of plates leading to the main event, then dessert and a selection of liqueurs. A drinks pairing – wines, freshly made juices, and garden-inspired cocktails – is designed to complement each course. There are aprons for those who want to get involved, a deck of cards to spark conversation, and a playlist curated by guests themselves. The Guardian called it “honest-to-goodness fun”; Forbes described the food as “unexpectedly – and affordably – brilliant.”
FIFTY TWO is open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays (six courses) and dinner Wednesday through Sunday (ten courses). The modern cuisine here is precise, seasonal, and rooted in the garden. It is a restaurant built for return visits.
