The story
At Mannion & Co Kitchen in Helmsley, Andrew Burton has applied a refined European sensibility to a former interior design studio. He transformed the space with an open kitchen and a deli counter that displays house cured sausages, salamis, and aged cheeses. This European kitchen operates on a straightforward first come first serve basis during daylight hours, leaving the focus entirely on the food.
Daily menus appear on boards throughout the venue, shifting with whatever ingredients arrive fresh that morning. Recent selections included sea bream paired with roasted salsify and a tomato caper cassoulet finished with red pepper pesto. Guests also frequently order ciabattas stuffed with roast belly pork and harissa mayo, or the recently introduced brunch plates featuring perfectly executed eggs Benedict. A small selection of champagnes remains available by the glass to complement these plates.
Climbing a rickety wooden staircase leads to an intimate upper floor where diners overlook the courtyard below. Every window frames Helmsley Castle, providing a steady historic backdrop while you eat. The Good Food Guide recognized this setup as a Local Gem for its relaxed daytime service and distinctive layout. Whether sitting near the deli shelves or tucked into a corner booth, visitors enjoy a calm atmosphere centered around honest, seasonal plates.
