The story
The Whitehouse in Lochaline delivers casual Highland cuisine from a repurposed 19th century mining canteen. Chris Stanley Fotos adapted the building in 2022, merging his training at One Devonshire Gardens with a strict commitment to wild foraging. Their kitchen prioritises direct partnerships with the Ardtornish estate and local crofters, earning consistent Good Food Guide and Michelin Selected recognition.
The dinner menu rotates weekly around available harvests and daily catch. Starters frequently feature treacle cured trout paired with ginger vinegar or a set goats cheese custard layered with pancetta and hazelnut. Main courses showcase roasted duck breast served with polenta and chanterelles, followed by hazelnut crusted halibut resting on beetroot risotto.
Dining rooms overlook Lochaline harbour through large windows framed by simple timber fixtures. The atmosphere remains deliberately relaxed during the busy summer months when ferries cross the Sound of Mull. Beverage lists prioritise regional distilleries and garden botanicals for zero waste cocktails, blending Nc’Nean whisky with homemade beech leaf noyau. This straightforward approach to Scottish cooking ensures every glass complements the coastal terroir.
