The story
On Knowle High Street, Cheal’s serves modern British food that balances tradition with precision. The restaurant, which relocated from Henley-in-Arden to this Solihull spot in 2023, occupies a handsome building where the dining room feels both relaxed and polished. Children are welcome, and there is a terrace for warmer months.
Chef Matt Cheal learned his craft over sixteen years at Simpsons in Birmingham, where he rose from a placement to head chef and helped the restaurant hold its Michelin star. In 2016 he opened his own place in Henley, then moved to Knowle to create a larger, more versatile restaurant. The kitchen’s philosophy is straightforward: source locally, let the seasons guide the menu, and keep the cooking clean and confident.
The à la carte menu changes regularly, but the tasting menu is the fullest expression of Matt Cheal’s cooking. Priced at £129.95 per person, it runs Thursday through Saturday and can be paired with wines selected to complement each course. There are also set lunch menus, a Sunday roast, afternoon tea, and a separate garden and vegan menu. For something more casual, Warren’s Bar serves small plates and cocktails on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Cheal’s holds a Michelin Recommended distinction, a mark of the kitchen’s consistency and the quality of its ingredients. The recognition fits naturally with a restaurant that has been quietly building a reputation for thoughtful, unfussy British cooking since 2014. Whether you come for a full tasting menu or a leisurely lunch, the service is attentive without being stiff, and the food speaks for itself.
