The story
On the edge of Bodmin Moor, in the village of Altarnun, The Rising Sun Inn is a traditional Cornish pub with serious culinary ambition. The pub’s approach is straightforward: serve freshly prepared, home-cooked dishes built from locally sourced ingredients, pour a good pint, and make everyone feel at home. The seasonal menu changes regularly, featuring hearty pub classics alongside daily specials and Sunday roasts.
The kitchen is led by Head Chef and co-owner Tim Kendall, whose career began at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow. He went on to work in London with Marcus Wareing at The Gilbert Scott and with Michel Roux Junior at the two-Michelin-starred Le Gavroche. After returning to Cornwall, Kendall won South West Chef of the Year in 2016, then South Chef of the Year in 2018 while working as head chef at The Idle Rocks in St Mawes. In 2020, he and his wife Terri took over The Rising Sun Inn, creating a relaxed pub focused on quality food and drink.
The kitchen’s Modern British cooking has earned a Michelin recommendation, a mark of the care and skill behind every plate. Whether you choose from the set lunch, set evening, or a la carte menus, the emphasis is on the freshest, carefully chosen seasonal ingredients. Dogs are welcome in the bar and garden, and the inn also offers rooms and camping for those looking to stay.
