The story
Laynes established itself as a defining Leeds café back in 2011, starting with a straightforward mission for local coffee drinkers. The founders built an independent espresso bar dedicated to sourcing beans from rotating roasters and extracting them with precision. That early focus on liquid craftsmanship laid the groundwork for everything that followed. Baristas still manage the morning rush at this New Station Street location, treating every pour with the same deliberate care that defined the original concept.
Word spread quickly about the steady quality, so the team expanded into food production without losing their core identity. Their own bakery in Armley now supplies the counter with daily pastries and sweet treats. Visitors commonly order the beetroot and pistachio Danish alongside a Leeds bun filled with rhubarb jam and Chantilly cream. Savoury plates arrived next, featuring buckwheat pancakes, sweetcorn fritters, and a slow braised beef shin ragù served over polenta.
The space eventually shifted its rhythm to welcome guests well after lunch service concluded. Evenings now feature a curated selection of wines, craft beers, and coffee cocktails that complement the relaxed seating area. This consistent approach to café dining and reliable drinks earned a Local Gem distinction from The Good Food Guide. The recognition highlights how the venue quietly supports commuters and neighbourhood regulars alike.
