The story
The George at Burpham delivers focused Modern British cooking inside a community-owned village pub on Main Street, Littlehampton. Martin and Charlotte Bull revived this eighteenth-century Grade II listed building after raising their family nearby. Their vision transformed the former inn into a gathering place that balances historic character with everyday hospitality. The Good Food Guide named it a Local Gem in 2026 for maintaining that original spirit while delivering consistent standards.
The kitchen sources the majority of its produce from farms within twenty miles of the kitchen door. This local supply chain shapes a menu where contemporary British cuisine meets straightforward technique. Diners encounter chargrilled octopus paired with smashed cannellini and chorizo alongside lamb merguez Scotch eggs preserved in lemon yogurt. Heavier plates feature south coast dressed crab served with fries or slow-cooked beef ragu tossed through fresh tagliatelle.
Dried hop strings hang from exposed ceiling beams above polished dining tables and freestanding wood-burners. Contemporary furnishings sit comfortably next to traditional brickwork and wide windows looking out toward the downs. Guests can choose from a curated wine programme supplied by Les Caves des Pyrenees, which emphasizes sustainable, organic and biodynamic selections. Local ales round out the bar cart for those preferring a quicker pour between courses.
