The story
Britannia Inn anchors the village of Llanmadoc with a reputation built on authentic Welsh gastropub fare. Owners Martin and Lindsay have guided this late seventeenth-century inn for over twenty years, drawing on global culinary experiences to refine their approach to local ingredients. Head Chef Martin holds a Guild of Chefs award, reflecting the kitchen's dedication to quality that earned the Good Food Guide recognition as a Local Gem.
The menu highlights seasonal produce from nearby farms, showcased through dishes like Gower asparagus paired with a scotch egg or rich Welsh oxtail tagliatelle. Salt marsh lamb arrives with butternut squash purée and red onion gel, while the pan-fried bream rests on new potatoes in a mussel curry cream. A home-smoked mackerel pâté with cucumber salsa often opens the meal, anchoring the Welsh gastropub menu in the waters of the Loughor Estuary, a hallmark of their Welsh cooking style.
Beneath beams reputedly salvaged from shipwrecks, the dining room offers a quieter contrast to the bustling bar area. This surviving tavern retains its original fireplace and bread oven, alongside patches of original gas lighting that speak to its history as one of four once-standing establishments. Large windows frame views across the water, making it a natural stop after walks along Cwm-Ivy or visits to Whiteford Lighthouse.
Desserts lean into regional flavors, such as an iced Welsh Penderyn whisky parfait layered with vanilla and tea, then finished with prune syrup. The bar serves real ales including Gower Gold and guest selections, plus premium lagers, complementing the homemade pub classics and specials board. Families are welcomed with playground access, and the dog-friendly outdoor terrace provides another option to enjoy the scenery.
