The story

August Bakery London: Good Food Guide Local Gem in Battersea

From Putney to Battersea

August Bakery in London began life far from a commercial kitchen, rooted in the domestic rhythm of founder Harry Robins' Putney flat. He started delivering loaves and pastries via cargo bike to a devoted group of regulars. This grassroots approach eventually led to a successful crowdfunding campaign, allowing Harry and his wife, Florrie Beard, to launch their first retail space at Clapham Common in December 2024. Today, the operation has expanded to Battersea Rise, yet the commitment to quality remains unchanged.

Meticulous bakes and seasonal focus

The Good Food Guide recognized this dedication with a Local Gem award for 2026, noting that the pair have wasted no time making their mark. Their production prioritises substance over style, though the results are visually striking. The bakery offers sweet, seasonal buns that shift with the calendar, alongside burnished focaccia sandwiches. Each bake demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail that defines the kitchen's output.

Service and community engagement

Visitors can find the team open Tuesday through Saturday, with Mondays closed. Operating hours begin in the early morning and conclude at 16:00 each day. Beyond daily sales, the bakery accepts special orders and organizes baking lessons for aspiring bakers. Direct communication remains central to the brand, with a dedicated contact system ensuring inquiries reach Harry and Florrie personally.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

What started in Harry Robins' Putney flat – loaves and pastries delivered by cargo bike to a band of devoted regulars – has blossomed into one of London's most exciting bakeries. Since crowdfunding to launch their Clapham Common shop in December 2024, Harry and his wife, Florrie Beard, have wasted no time making their mark with meticulous bakes that prioritise substance over style – although the line-up of sweet, seasonal buns and burnished focaccia sandwiches is hardly short on good looks. Proof that the best things really do come from small beginnings.
