The story
Set within a historic listed building on Waterloo Place, Claro brings the spirit of its acclaimed Tel Aviv restaurant to the heart of St James's. Founded by three close friends and rooted in the culinary vision of chef Ran Shmueli, this modern Mediterranean restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its vibrant, ingredient-led cooking.
The day-to-day kitchen is led by Head Chef Shadi Issawy, whose cooking draws deeply from memory, heritage, and a love of seasonal produce. Working alongside Ran Shmueli—a leading figure in the culinary scene for over 30 years—Shadi champions the finest British produce, complemented by spices, aromatic herbs, and colourful vegetables. The result is a menu of bold, contemporary dishes that celebrate seasonality and generosity.
The open kitchen serves an ever-changing selection of specials alongside a curated wine list. Diners can choose from a sample à la carte menu, a set lunch offering exceptional value, or a popular weekend brunch that elevates lazy mornings with expertly crafted cocktails. The pre-theatre menu, available Monday to Friday, offers a two-course option for £42 or three courses for £49, with dishes such as slow-cooked salsify and parsnips with skordalia cream, and turbot steak with ras el hanout butter sauce.
Claro also offers versatile spaces for private events, from the light-filled Gallery for up to 12 guests to the adaptable Loft, which can accommodate up to 66 seated or 90 standing. Whether for a family gathering, celebration, or corporate event, the team can create bespoke menus to suit any occasion.
