The story
Counter 71, on Nile Street in Shoreditch, describes itself as a celebration and a platform to showcase the very best of British farmers, fishermen and growers. The kitchen, led by Chef Director Joe Laker, presents a multi-course tasting menu of elevated Modern British cuisine.
With seating for just 16 guests, the restaurant offers an intimate counter dining experience. The menu changes with the seasons, reflecting the work of the people who harness them. Dinner spans 10 courses; lunch is a shorter 6-course affair. Wine pairings are curated by Sommelier Harry Cooper, who also offers bespoke selections for events.
For its focused, ingredient-driven approach, Counter 71 earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The space is part of a two-level venue; downstairs is lowcountry, a sister bar specialising in cocktails and American whiskey. The two spaces share a focus on craft but maintain distinct personalities. The restaurant's Modern British tasting menu is the centrepiece, with optional wine, non-alcoholic, or mixed pairings.
Counter 71 is available for private hire, with minimum spends starting at £3,000 for the upstairs dining room. The team accommodates dietary requirements when possible, though vegan and dairy-free options are not currently available.
