The story

Danclair’s Kitchen London: Caribbean Sharing Plates in Brixton Village

The kitchen and its origins

London’s Danclair’s Kitchen opened in August 2021 under chef Brian Danclair, delivering a focused Caribbean cuisine rooted in personal history. His cooking method blends techniques gathered across Europe and the Americas with the home recipes of his Venezuelan grandmother, whose portrait now anchors the dining room as a vibrant wall mural. The restaurant secured a Good Food Guide rating for its precise execution within the tight footprint of Granville Arcade. Daily menus rely on fresh produce sourced directly from Brixton Market.

Refined sharing plates

The Caribbean menu highlights bold yet accessible small plates designed for communal dining. Guests frequently order the legendary cod fish fritters alongside flash-grilled sirloin or a catch of the day prepared simply over high heat. Spiced empanadas follow a family recipe passed down through generations, while grilled pepper calamari arrives with a smoked aïoli. Stew vegetables are served with thick slices of French bread specifically intended to soak up the rich sauces.

Mellow dining and signature pours

The compact space sits comfortably among the surrounding shops and cafés, maintaining a relaxed rhythm throughout lunch and dinner service. A large glass pitcher of house rum punch combines pineapple, orange juice, and Wray & Nephew rum to balance the spicy notes found throughout the meal. Fine wines are selected to complement the island influences on the plate rather than compete with them. Staff move efficiently around the narrow layout while preserving an intimate, unhurried pace for every table.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Having scored a huge hit with his ultra-hip Caribbean joint Fish, Wings & Tings, globetrotting chef Brian Danclair added a second string to his Brixton Village bow in 2021. His self-styled 'Kitchen' is squeezed in among the shops and cafés of Granville Arcade and brings yet more precision and purpose to his local endeavours, with obvious nods to his Trinidadian roots and culinary travels. He also pays homage to the home cooking of his Venezuelan grandmother, whose face – as a bright, trippy mural – covers an entire wall of the buzzy dining room. Danclair can often be seen ‘skipping between his two restaurants with a Carib beer in hand’, when he’s not frying his legendary 'cod fish fritters' or lip-puckering chicken wings – ‘tossed gloriously in chilli and glazed with sweet guava,’ according to one fan. Elsewhere, the short menu roams from ‘stew vegetables’ with French bread for soaking up the sauce to grilled pepper calamari with smoked aïoli or headily spiced empanadas (made to his grandma’s recipe and served with a pot of chimichurri). If something more substantial is required, consider the grilled ‘catch of the day’ or flash-grilled sirloin steak. There are no desserts, but you can always get giddy with the house rum punch (pineapple and orange juice laced with copious quantities of Wray & Nephew).
