The story
Dinings in Marylebone serves modern Japanese cuisine with a European twist, founded by Tomonari Chiba and Keiji Fuku. The chefs opened the restaurant in 2006 after training at Nobu, choosing a quiet residential street to showcase their combined expertise. Their background supports meticulous sushi preparation, while a playful sensibility drives the creative fusion seen throughout the menu.
The menu focuses on tapas-sized sharing plates designed for communal dining. Japanese foundations blend with pan-Asian influences, visible in dishes like a mini taco stuffed with tuna tartare or scallops seared with yuzu, chilli, and soy. Sushi presentations feature subtle innovations, including sea bass topped with umeboshi purée and tosazu jelly. Richer items provide contrast, such as the grilled o-toro mini donburi and aubergine nasu miso loaded with umami. Sake remains the definitive drink choice, with a selection curated to match the diverse flavors.
Dinings fills a converted Edwardian house, utilizing the ground floor and basement to create a compact dining room. Designer I Yu employed raw concrete and timber to suggest the vibe of a traditional izakaya. A narrow sushi bar runs along the street level, allowing guests to watch the chefs work, while additional seating descends into the basement. This bijou arrangement fosters a close connection between the kitchen and the diners. The restaurant's reputation for quality was reinforced when the kitchen secured a Good Food Guide recognition.
