The story
Garden Café in London serves a modern European menu rooted in seasonal simplicity. Head Chef Alex Jackson draws from his books Sardine and Frontières to craft straightforward dishes that change daily. The kitchen sources responsibly from Swaledale Butchers, Fin & Flounder, and Neal's Yard. The venue won the Leading Culture Destinations award for Best Restaurant upon opening in 2018.
Warm days bring marinated chard with stracciatella and pangrattato, or a cooling bowl of ajo blanco. Venison mince with swede and horseradish appears in colder months. Fresh fish includes brill on the bone with crispy potatoes and herb butter. Ricotta gnocchi tossed with datterini tomatoes and olive oil draws repeat guests. Dinner runs on Tuesdays and Fridays alongside the main lunch service.
Diners sit within a glass and bronze pavilion that frames the museum's greenery. Outdoor tables spill into the Dan Pearson-designed courtyard when the weather permits. The space accommodates private events and meetings using bespoke catering plans.
In-house pastry chefs prepare signature focaccia, cakes, and biscuits fresh each morning. Chocolate semifreddo and baked custard with plums appear on dessert boards. Juices, cordials, and beers accompany a selection of low-intervention wines. Friday evenings feature a Tour de France series exploring provincial French cooking through fixed-price menus.
