The story

Himalayan Kitchen Penge | Award-Winning Nepalese Cooking in London

The Kitchen and Its Foundations

Himalayan Kitchen brings authentic Nepalese cuisine to a quiet corner of Penge, London. The Good Food Guide recently recognised the venue as a Local Gem, noting how the family-run setup consistently delivers spice-laden plates. The head chef honed his technique across established Indian restaurants before settling in south London. That training informs a straightforward approach to Nepalese cuisine, where complex spice blends are balanced against fresh ingredients.

Signature Flavours on the Plate

The menu balances aromatic curries with handcrafted staples that define the region. Guests frequently order the momo dumplings, which arrive steamed or pan-fried alongside sharp chutneys. The garlicky Goan fish curry features tender tilapia simmered in a rich coconut base, while the bhindi dopiaza offers crisp okra coated in a layered onion gravy. For heartier portions, the masu aloo combines diced lamb and potatoes with regional herbs, spring onions, and a slow-reduced tomato sauce.

The Dining Space and Service

The interior maintains a straightforward layout that keeps the focus entirely on the food. Staff handle both dine-in orders and takeaway requests with consistent warmth. Visitors often claim the outdoor tables to enjoy a mango lassi while waiting for their meals. A cold bottle of Gurkha beer pairs effortlessly with the robust flavours typical of Nepalese cuisine.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

A godsend for the inhabitants of Penge, this no-frills, family-run eatery is a spice-laden local asset worth knowing about. The chef honed his craft at Indian hot spots including Benares, and he serves up a wide-ranging menu of fresh, flavourful and aromatic curry-house classics leavened with Nepalese specialities such as momo dumplings. The garlicky Goan fish curry (made with tilapia) is a top shout, and we can also recommend the bhindi dopiaza and masu aloo (diced lamb and potato with Nepalese herbs, spring onion and tomato sauce). Service is exceptionally friendly, even if you’re simply ordering a takeaway – and you can always sit outside with a mango lassi while you’re waiting. Otherwise, a bottle of Gurkha beer should hit the spot.
