Kitchen Table

Chef James Knappett and wife Sandia Chang host guests at a horseshoe counter for a daily-changing Modern British tasting menu in Fitzrovia.

The story

Kitchen Table London | Two Michelin Star Modern Counter Dining Experience

The Experience

At Kitchen Table in Fitzrovia, the dining room is a stage. A horseshoe-shaped counter wraps around the open kitchen, putting Chef James Knappett and his team directly in front of twelve guests. This is not a passive meal—there is full interaction, with each course presented and explained by the chef who prepared it. The setup offers an unfiltered view of the kitchen’s rhythm and precision, turning dinner into an intimate performance.

Chef & Philosophy

James Knappett’s path to this counter passed through some of the world’s most exacting kitchens: Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Petrus, Thomas Keller’s Per Se, and René Redzepi’s noma. He opened Kitchen Table in 2012, earned its first Michelin star in 2014, and achieved a second star in 2018—a rating the restaurant has held ever since. That same year, Michelin also recognised the warmth of the experience with their ‘Welcome and Service Award’.

The cooking is firmly Modern British, seasonal and ingredient-led. Each day, a new tasting menu emerges from what Knappett’s trusted network of independent suppliers provides: day-boat fish, foraged wilds, and responsibly farmed produce. The structure is simple and bold—each course centres on a single ingredient. One night it might be scallop, another truffle or deer—amplifying the quality of the produce without distraction.

The Pairing

Alongside the kitchen, an equally considered beverage programme runs the room. Sandia Chang, an award-winning sommelier and Knappett’s wife, curates the wine list with a focus on Grower Champagnes, offered by the glass, bottle, or as a full pairing. There is also a Champagne pairing and a soft pairing for those who prefer non-alcoholic options. The bar menu, meanwhile, plays with house-made spirits and liqueurs.

Husband and wife team chef James Knappett and sommelier Sandia Chang worked in world famous restaurants Noma in Copenhagen and Per Se in New York before returning to London to open this counter dining restaurant in 2012 (it’s a partnership with JKS Restaurants, which also has the likes of Lyle’s and Sabor on its books). In its first incarnation, the Charlotte Street restaurant was also home to the Bubbledogs hotdog and champagne concept, but shortly after the pandemic this was transformed into a new lounge and bar that now gives diner the option to go for a drink before or after their meal in the restaurant, which is to the rear of the space. But the number of covers has not increased, with Knappett still serving just 15 covers sat around the horseshoe-shaped bar that surrounds the kitchen, with Chang on hand to guide customers through the restaurant’s eclectic wine cellar. Few chefs push harder than Knappett, who uses exceptional ingredients to create an ever-changing menu of small but perfectly formed, beautifully balanced dishes that make use of wide range of cooking techniques. Kitchen Table won its second star in 2018 and a third one must surely be in Knappett’s sights.
