The story
La Trompette has served consistent modern European cooking in Chiswick since opening in 2001. Chef Greg Wellman took the helm after stints at The Square, Chez Bruce, and Elystan Street, bringing a background that spans hospitality management in Hampshire and extensive travels through Australasia and South America. His passion for seafood reflects his love of surfing, while global journeys inform the diverse approach seen across the monthly changing carte.
The kitchen looks principally to southern France and the Mediterranean coast, often punctuated by assertive East Asian seasoning. A first course might layer Hass avocado, Tokyo turnips, and enoki mushrooms with yuzu ponzu, chilli, ginger, sesame, and coriander, while salmon sashimi pairs pistachios with pickled rhubarb and white soy. Main courses feature robust combinations like Ibérico pork presa alongside pancetta and baby beets, or a vegetarian pumpkin and amaretti agnolotti dressed in sage beurre noisette with wild mushrooms.
Inside the large expansive room with clothed tables and a naked floor, diners enjoy serene evenings or summer lunches on the terrace where seating operates on a first-come basis. The space maintains an elegant confidence that matches the culinary standard recognized by The Good Food Guide. A superlative wine collection supports the menu, featuring rare vintages and selections like a macerated Sussex sparkling rosé or a Nebbiolo from the Adelaide Hills to complement the food.
