The story

Lao Dao London: Traditional Chinese Xinjiang Cooking in Elephant & Castle

A Warm, Welcoming Space

Vintage wooden furniture lines the walls alongside patterned tiles and large mirrors that fill the room with light. The home-style interior sets a relaxed tone, attracting a steady stream of neighbours who appreciate the unpretentious environment. Staff navigate the crowded floor with efficiency, delivering food promptly while maintaining a friendly pace.

Signature Dishes from Xinjiang

The kitchen prepares regional dishes from north-west China, centring the menu on noodle creations and grilled meats. The da jan pi serves as a crowd favourite, presenting a chunky mix of free-range chicken, potatoes, peppers, and sauce over handmade belt noodles. Cumin-spiced lamb skewers and fried dumplings round out the offerings, delivering concentrated flavours that pair well with the filling stews. House staff suggest ordering Chinese tea to complement the savoury spices.

The dining room frequently hosts local residents, reinforcing the spot's reputation as a dependable neighbourhood destination. The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

‘They have the longest noodles I’ve ever eaten,’ declared an ardent fan of this cheap, cheerful and highly delicious eatery on Walworth Road. Homely decor sets the scene (vintage wooden furniture, tiled walls, big mirrors), while the kitchen specialises in regional cuisine from the Xinjiang province in north-west China – so the menu is also big on fried dumplings and skewered BBQ ‘shish’ (try the cumin-spiced lamb). Helpings are large for the price, culminating in the must-order da jan pi (aka ‘big plate chicken’) – a chunky stew loaded with pieces of free-range chicken, potatoes, peppers and handmade belt noodles. The place is always packed with locals and service is brisk, although there’s no rush to leave. Drink Chinese tea.
