The story

Master Wei Xi'an Hammersmith: Authentic Shaanxi Noodles in London

The kitchen and its founder

Master Wei Xi’an Hammersmith channels the robust flavours of Chinese cooking directly into London. Chef Guirong Wei arrived in the city from her hometown in 2008, eventually leading her first solo venue after years at Xi’an Impression. She established the restaurant to introduce British diners to the two-thousand-year history of her regional palate. The Good Food Guide recently named this branch a Local Gem, noting how faithfully the menu preserves those original recipes.

Handcrafted noodles and regional flavours

The kitchen builds its reputation around biangbiang noodles, which chefs cut into thick strips and slap against the worktop until they reach their characteristic width. Beef and vegetable options arrive swimming in generous portions of chilli sauce. Hand-pulled varieties pair minced pork with crisp beansprouts and cucumber. A lighter starter features thinly sliced pig’s ear dressed with plenty of crushed garlic and a pleasantly numbing oil.

The dining space and drinks

Guests settle onto slate floors beneath hanging lanterns in a compact room where tables sit close together. This intimate layout encourages a bustling, neighbourhood feel that matches the brisk pace of service. Staff keep the energy warm and attentive throughout the evening. Pairs of these hearty plates work well alongside exotic cocktails or a small selection of wines chosen to cut through the rich spices.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

An offshoot of Master Wei Xi'an in Bloomsbury, this latest offering from chef Guirong Wei is a short walk from Hammersmith Broadway, on the ground floor of a modern development. Inside, the slate-floored dining room is festooned with lanterns and filled with tightly squeezed tables, while service is super-friendly. We enjoyed thinly sliced pig's ear laced with pleasantly numbing chilli oil and tons of garlic, followed by big bowls of signature Xi'an biang biang noodles with beef and chilli sauce, as well as hand-pulled noodles with minced pork, beansprouts and cucumber – all reasonably priced. To drink there are exotic-sounding cocktails and a handful of wines.
