The story
Shuk brings Israeli cuisine to Antwerp through the focused lens of chefs Ika and Molly Zakens. The couple met at the École Ferrandi in Paris in 1998 and later built a reputation with their acclaimed Lamalo Restaurant before opening this project in 2020. They channel their years of travel across Israel, the United States, and Europe into straightforward dishes that honor regional techniques. Recent Le Fooding recognition notes how their uncomplicated approach resonates with diners seeking genuine market-style flavors.
The menu centers on shared Israeli dishes inspired by the open-air markets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Guests typically start with fresh-made hummus, choosing between classic chickpea, wild mushroom, or za’atar chicken preparations. Fire-roasted vegetables anchor the tasting experience, including batata sweet potatoes dressed with harissa and dukkah, alongside smoky aubergine topped with crushed tomatoes and pomegranate. Sabich pitas stuffed with tempura eggplant, hard-boiled egg, and amba provide a satisfying handheld option for lunch.
Paintings of vegetables decorate the compact dining room, creating a bright backdrop for communal eating. The layout encourages guests to order multiple mezze and pitas for the table rather than individual plates. Weekly specials rotate around seasonal produce, currently featuring dishes like Chraime stew and K’titzot. Natural light fills the venue during daytime service, while evening hours shift toward a relaxed pace for sharing desserts like tahini sundaes or Basque cheesecake.
