The story

Sushi Kyu Soho: Award-Winning Japanese Sushi Counter in London's Heart

The Chef and the Counter

Sushi Kyu opened in Soho in 2024 as the lively sister restaurant of Cubé Mayfair. Owner-chef Takamasa Mogi directs both venues, ensuring the same rigorous standards across the operation. The kitchen team includes sushi chefs Bence Farkas and Hok Man Lo, who bring extensive training from Nobu and Hong Kong establishments like Sushi Shikon. At the compact ten-seat counter, these artisans craft every piece using premium ingredients sourced directly from their origins.

Dishes and Recognition

The Good Food Guide recognises this venue for balancing high-quality preparation with accessible pricing. Diners can follow the chef's lead through the omakase tasting menu or select specific items like the Toro Taku roll, where toro meets pickled radish inside crisp nori. The kitchen applies precise techniques to ingredients ranging from Scottish salmon sashimi with ponzu to French red mullet garnished with shredded shiso. Standout pieces include prawn nigiri dressed with ikura and green chilli sauce. Freshly grated wasabi accompanies each plate, underscoring the commitment to authenticity. This dedication to detail defines the restaurant's approach to Japanese cooking.

Atmosphere and Drinks

The dining room centres around a wooden counter within a light, simply appointed space. This layout allows guests to watch the chefs assemble dishes like the Kyu Chirashi Don or share small plates of edamame and miso soup. A black door marked 'Karaoke' adds character to the Soho location, while the counter seating remains the focal point. The calm atmosphere mirrors the discipline of Japanese cuisine, creating a focused environment for the meal. Beverages such as sake flights and whisky pair well with the seafood selection.

The Good Food Guide — Good

London's sushi scene is such that one can struggle to find the sweet spot between a plastic tray of maki rolls from the supermarket and a three-figure omakase blow-out. Friendly little Sushi Kyu in Soho is pitched just right. It's somewhere to go for a solo chirashi don lunch (from around £25) or, on occasion, for a reasonably priced omakase experience. We sat around the wooden counter with a handful of solo diners – it’s that sort of place – and tried the full omakase (£70+), which includes an appetiser, eight pieces of nigiri sushi, a temaki roll, and dessert, across 11 mini courses. At lunch, a reduced version is available for around £50. The attention to detail is impressive: Scottish salmon sashimi with ponzu comes with its own pretty seaweed salad garnished with shiso flowers; French red mullet, meanwhile, is topped with a little shredded shiso. The wasabi? Fresh, of course. Nigiri can be classical (lean tuna, perhaps) or more creative (prawn with ikura and green chilli sauce). The care that goes into the preparation and presentation of each course is evident, and the quality is very high. Diners can also piece together their own sushi selection including specials such as amberjack and sea urchin nigiri or sashimi. Drink sake by the glass, carafe or bottle – or go for the salaryman’s favourite, whisky and soda. It’s a light, simply appointed room, with a forbidding black door at the back marked ‘Karaoke’. Pass through it if you must.
