The story

Tamila Clapham Review: Award-Winning South Indian Dining in London

The Kitchen and Philosophy

Tamila Clapham brings The Tamil Prince's high-quality South Indian cooking to Northcote Road. This sibling venue mirrors the success of the King's Cross original while operating in SW11. The kitchen presents a mercifully short menu of small plates, curries, and sides designed for sharing. A cookbook is available for pre-order, offering recipes for those who wish to recreate the dishes later. Buttery, flaky roti appears alongside comforting meat, veggie, and vegan options.

Standout Flavours

The menu invites sampling across diverse textures, starting with crunchy, chewy onion bhaji served with sweet mint chutney. Rich and deeply satisfying curried dhal provides a hearty base, while cheese and chilli dosas deliver a distinct treat. The Thanjavur chicken curry blends turmeric, coriander, and coconut with a precise level of heat. Soft rotis make it easy to scoop up the sauces, and the meal concludes with hot, sticky gulab jamun sitting in a pool of rose-flavoured milk.

Room and Service

Inside the cavernous dining room, unadorned tables sit close enough to invite conversation between neighbours. Bentwood chairs are positioned to ensure smooth movement through the space, and carafes of wine and water draw from unobtrusive taps at the bar. Service remains casual yet highly efficient, maintaining flow even when every spot is taken. The layout supports private dining events for up to seventy guests, though individual diners should book well ahead as walk-in availability is limited.

The Good Food Guide — Good

No space is wasted in this cavernous restaurant. Unadorned tables are close enough to join in neighbours’ conversations, bentwood chairs are pulled in to let others go past, even carafes of wine and water are filled from unobtrusive taps at the bar.  But at this sibling of Tamila in King's Cross, it's a necessity – every spot was occupied when we arrived for an early dinner, and people were waiting for our table when we left. The lure is high-quality South Indian cooking, with dishes listed on a mercifully short menu of small plates, curries and sides, all designed for sharing. We started with crunchy, chewy, robust onion bhaji with a sweet mint chutney for dipping, and a choice of dosa – the cheese and chilli version was a real treat (as was the rich and deeply satisfying curried dhal). Elsewhere, the Thanjavur chicken curry, laced with turmeric, coriander and coconut, had just the right amount of heat. Save a little room for gulab jamun, all hot and sticky, sitting on a pool of moreishly sweet, rose-flavoured milk. Service is casual but very efficient. Although some tables are kept back for walk-ins, do book if you can – and as soon as you can – or be prepared to eat in the middle of the afternoon.
