The story

Tarn Bakery London: A Hilltop Neighbourhood Bakery Recognised by The Good Food Guide

Ascending Hazellville Road

Tarn Bakery sits at the summit of a steep Highgate climb, offering a quiet retreat for visitors seeking a refined neighbourhood bakery. Florin Grama, formerly head pastry chef at Pophams, designed this compact space to reward those who make the ascent. Just a handful of tables fill the front room, keeping the focus squarely on the counter. The Good Food Guide recently named the spot a Local Gem for exactly this kind of unpretentious dedication.

Flour and seasonal craft

The kitchen centres on UK grown wheat and produce sourced directly from small regional farms. Every morning brings fresh batches of sourdough alongside buttery Danish pastries and citrus glazed cardamom buns. Grama treats each sweet item as a study in timing and temperature rather than pure decoration. The baking menu shifts with the harvest, ensuring that every loaf and cake reflects the current season.

Savoury plates and weekend tables

Sweet items share counter space with substantial savoury options built for lunch. A Jerusalem artichoke and Alpine Meadow cheese swirl arrives dressed with kale sauce and walnut pesto, delivering enough substance to stand alone as a meal. Regular sandwich and toastie selections keep the midday flow steady for locals. On select weekends, the space transforms for communal pizza nights that bring the neighbourhood together.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

As you head up the steep incline of Hazellville Road, you’ll know you’re on the right track. Just a couple of tables furnish the front of this small but sophisticated bakery from Pophams' former head pastry chef Florin Grama. Thanks to scrupulous sourcing from local farmers, the team can deliver an array of seasonal delights ranging from cakes and Danish pastries to sweet little cardamom buns in citrus sugar. Savoury flavours are a strong suit (our Jerusalem artichoke and Alpine Meadow cheese swirl with kale sauce and walnut pesto was a meal in itself), along with a tempting spread of sandwiches and toasties. They have regular pizza nights too.
