The story
In the heart of Mayfair, just off Oxford Circus, Tendril is a plant-first restaurant that proves vegetables deserve the spotlight. Chef and founder Rishim Sachdeva, a self-described former "hardcore meat eater", launched Tendril in 2019 after setting himself a Veganuary challenge. That personal experiment turned into a thriving kitchen that has earned a Michelin Recommended award for its thoughtful, ingredient-led cooking.
The restaurant’s ethos is refreshingly direct: no fake meat, no heavily processed plant-based ingredients. Instead, Sachdeva and his team showcase what’s possible with brilliant vegetables, sourced as close to the restaurant as possible and treated with precision and respect. The result is a menu that changes regularly with the seasons, available as both à la carte and a multi-course Discovery set menu.
Tendril operates a root-to-shoot philosophy, using every part of the produce. Leftover cauliflower stalks become kimchi, surplus trimmings go into long ferments, pickling juice finds its way into cocktails, and beetroot tops appear in salads. This commitment to zero waste runs through everything they do.
Sachdeva’s cooking draws on experience in some of the UK’s best kitchens, including The Fat Duck and the Dairy in Clapham. His food is unfussy but precise, letting the quality of the produce speak. The wine list, made up of vegan wines from small European producers, and the house cocktails made with kitchen techniques, complete the experience.
The restaurant serves a set menu and à la carte throughout the week, with a long brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The dining room has a warm, buzzy energy – as Jay Rayner of The Guardian put it, "the buzz you get when people have found their way to something distinctive, clever and objectively good."
Tendril welcomes children and well-behaved dogs, and offers gluten-free, nut-free and allium-free menus at every service. A private room is available for group dining. Whether you come for the inventive brunch, a lunchtime set menu, or a dinner built around the best of the season, this is a place that changes how you think about plant-first eating.
