The story

The French House, London – Iconic Soho Pub & Restaurant with Michelin Recognition

The French House

A Soho institution since its early days, The French House on Dean Street is as much a part of London’s cultural fabric as the artists, writers, and actors who have filled its two small floors for decades. Downstairs, the bar operates with a famously simple set of rules: no music, no machines, no television, no mobile phones. The result is a haven for conversation, where friends and strangers alike gather over a remarkable selection of thirty champagnes and wines by the glass. The atmosphere is warm, unpretentious, and alive with the kind of lively chatter that defines the best of Soho.

Upstairs, the restaurant offers a more intimate experience. The dining room is small, with just two sittings for lunch and dinner, Monday to Saturday. The menu changes daily, reflecting a commitment to fresh, seasonal cooking that has earned the venue a Michelin Recommended award. Dishes are straightforward and elegant, letting quality ingredients speak for themselves. The setting is relaxed yet refined, a natural extension of the bar below.

Given the restaurant’s size, reservations are essential and open 60 days in advance. The team can accommodate groups of up to six, with private events possible for around twenty guests. Whether you come for a glass of wine at the bar or a full dinner upstairs, The French House offers a genuinely Soho experience—one that has been cherished for generations and continues to welcome newcomers with the same easy warmth.

For generations of thespians, journos and assorted bohemians, ‘The French’ has been a talisman of old Soho – a pub with its own code (no mobile phones, no music, beer in half-pint glasses). Yet this brilliant boozing relic also sports a cosily traditional upstairs dining room with proper culinary aspirations. The kitchen has played host to a clutch of big-name chefs in the past, but current incumbent Neil Borthwick seems set for a long run – thanks to his stout-hearted, no-nonsense approach to rustic provincial French cooking. He also allows British ingredients to do a merry jig with their Gallic counterparts, resulting in dishes that defiantly avoid clever-clever frills and furbelows. Instead, visitors can expect a line-up of classics bursting with gutsy up-front flavours and bags of largesse: Archill oysters with mignonette sauce; chargrilled ox tongue with rémoulade sauce; calf’s brains doused with brown butter, capers and parsley; ink-braised cuttlefish with coco beans. Order steak and you will get a mighty rump or ribeye plus French fries, watercress, shallot salad and béarnaise sauce. For afters, indulge in the French-accented cheeseboard, a plate of madeleines or something sweet such as Madagascan chocolate mousse with crème fraîche. Drink French cidre or pick from the pub’s all-Gallic wine list (with plenty by the glass).

This tiny upstairs dining room above what looks to be a standard Soho boozer has an illustrious culinary history, having once been home to Margot and Fergus Henderson before the latter left to open St John, with Margot staying on with Melanie Arnold before also moving on to open Rochelle Canteen. It’s now in the safe hands of chef Neil Borthwick, husband of Angela Hartnett, who left Merchants Tavern in Shoreditch to take on the space at the tail end of 2018 with little pomp or ceremony. Borthwick quickly set about reintroducing the kind of hearty, fuss-free fare that always felt so at home in the surroundings, reinstating The French House as the go-to place for Soho gourmands after a fix of traditional French cooking. Menus are handwritten daily and prone to change but you’re likely to see oysters, alongside other starters of pig’s head terrine with pickles; and calf’s brain with brown butter, capers and parsley. The selection of mains is either/or, with normally a choice of two (vegetarians and vegans may struggle here) and the list of sides is equally tight – some sort of potatoes; a green salad; and greens. The dessert menu is as equally brief but no less beguiling, with Madagascar chocolate jostling for position with The French House’s excellent madeleines, available by the half dozen. In short, Borthwick has created a democratic and deeply satisfying restaurant the likes of which Soho had been crying out for since the Hendersons, and more recently Florence Night of Polpetto, vacated the upstairs room. The only challenge is getting a table.
