The story

The George Fitzrovia: Award-Winning British Gastropub in Historic Grade II Listed Building

The Kitchen and British Standards

The George anchors Great Portland Street in London's Fitzrovia, delivering classic British cuisine inside a Grade II-listed building that dates back to the 1700s. This historic venue hosted late 18th-century political radicalism and later welcomed writers and poets before evolving into a modern gastropub where heritage meets contemporary comfort. The kitchen focuses on refined interpretations of British pub standards using time-honored preparation methods. Signature plates feature black pudding Scotch eggs paired with Oxford sauce, while slow-braised ox cheek rests atop smooth mashed potatoes. Seasonal produce drives the menu rotation, keeping flavors current throughout the year.

A Hostelry Recognized by Critics

The ground-floor bar showcases gilded mirrors that frame the space, lush leather banquettes that invite relaxation, and dark wood panelling reflecting the building's age. This atmosphere helped secure a Local Gem award in the 2026 Good Food Guide, which praised the venue's blend of character and reliable dining. Guests seeking a more enclosed setting can book the Gluepot private dining room on the first floor, equipped with a viewing screen and capacity for ten guests.

Drinks and Evening Ambience

The bar stocks an extensive wine list anchored by English sparkling wines, alongside cask ales and artisan beers. Guinness pours consistently, backed by a selection of Irish whiskeys and seasonal cocktails. Dessert choices include rhubarb and custard trifle and a banana split. Live music performs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, bringing a vibrant rhythm to the Fitzrovia venue.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

A central hub for political radicalism in the latter years of the 18th century, this gorgeous Grade II-listed Fitzrovia boozer has been revitalised as a hostelry for the ages. We recommend the ground-floor bar for its alluring heritage vibe (all gilded mirrors, lush leather banquettes and dark wood panelling) and its menu of classic pub grub – think black pudding Scotch eggs with Oxford sauce, braised ox cheek with mash, beer-battered fish, rhubarb and custard trifle, banana split. Prodigious Sunday roasts also come highly recommended, as does the admirable drinks selection (terrific English sparkling wines, artisan beers, ‘very, very nice Guinness’, cheeky cocktails et al). Brilliant staff, too.
