The story

Tiella Trattoria in London brings authentic Italian cooking to Bethnal Green

The Chef and the Kitchen

Tiella Trattoria sits on Columbia Road in London, where chef Dara Klein leads an Italian kitchen that earned a Very Good rating from The Good Food Guide. She took over the former Globe pub and rebuilt the space around a central open kitchen. Diners often gather near the pass to watch her plate punchy dishes built on straightforward techniques and fresh ingredients. The kitchen favors bold flavors without unnecessary fuss, letting quality produce carry the meal.

Standout Dishes

A salad of delica pumpkin and radicchio agrodolce gains depth from a creamy taleggio dressing that ties the bitter greens together. Bowls of pasta e fagioli arrive silken and rich, defying their humble origins through careful simmering and precise seasoning. The braised squid stands out as a particularly tender option, cooked until it yields easily and finished with olives and fragrant mint. These plates reward lingering rather than rushing through a quick lunch.

Room and Drinks

Stained glass windows cast colored light across vintage Italian crockery and framed family portraits that line the walls. This curated mix gives the dining room a lived-in warmth that feels completely at ease with casual crowds. Guests who skip reservations can still find space at the dedicated bar for stuzzichini and easy sips. A Cynar spritz or a carafe of Tuscan red pairs naturally with the relaxed pace of the evening service.

The Good Food Guide — Very Good

It’s not the first time an up-and-coming chef has set up shop in an east London pub, but the spirit with which Dara Klein has transformed what was once the Globe suggests this one is here for the long haul. From the stained glass window to the vintage Italian crockery and family portraits, the whole place is suffused with life and character. An everyone-is-welcome atmosphere prevails. Cheery, unfazed Klein oversees the open kitchen, delivering punchy dishes full of confidence and good instinct. A salad of delica pumpkin, radicchio agrodolce and a unifying taleggio dressing was an early hit full of depth and tang, while a bowl of silken pasta e fagioli defied its humble origins. To follow, there might be a saline dish of braised squid with olives and fragrant mint – so triumphantly tender you could cut it with a spoon. This is food that deserves to be lingered over. But if time is short, or you haven’t booked ahead, the dedicated bar is an open-armed call for walk-ins to dip into some stuzzichini, sip a Cynar spritz or linger over a carafe of easy-drinking Tuscan red.
