The story
Since opening its doors in 2009, Browns Bonds Hill has become a defining presence in Derry~Londonderry's dining scene. Chef Patron Ian Orr and Marcus Roulston have built a restaurant where the food is sumptuous, the service is precise, and the atmosphere is smart yet refreshingly unpretentious.
The restaurant's consistent inclusion in the Michelin Guide is no accident. It is recognition earned through a commitment to local produce and precise technique. Orr's Modern British menus are built around the best ingredients the region offers, transformed into dishes that feel both grounded and ambitious. The team holds two AA Rosettes, making it the only restaurant in the city to achieve that mark of culinary distinction.
Orr is the driving force behind the kitchen, a chef who has been named Best Chef in Ulster by the Irish Restaurant Association and Chef of the Year by Georgina Campbell. Despite appearances on BBC's Saturday Kitchen and the Great British Menu, his favourite place remains in the kitchen cooking. The restaurant’s blog notes that a lunch here is “a sequence of comforting, rich displays of love and affection for local produce.”
Browns Bonds Hill offers à la carte lunch and dinner, plus tasting menus. The kitchen is attentive to different preferences, with dedicated vegan and vegetarian tasting menus available—a reflection of the restaurant's recognition by PETA as one of the top vegan fine dining restaurants in the UK.
The dining room provides a range of experiences across the seasons, including wine dinners and cookery demonstrations. Whether for a business lunch, a private party, or a quiet dinner, the restaurant’s ethos of "excellent food, genuine hospitality, and unpretentious service" remains constant.
