The story
Award-winning chef Benjamin Palmer returned to his hometown of Looe to open The Sardine Factory in July 2018. It had long been his dream to run a restaurant in the fishing port where he grew up. After cooking in kitchens across the UK and Europe, he settled back in Looe with his wife and young family. His passion earned him the starter win at the Parisian banquet for BBC Two’s Great British Menu in 2024. The team was also delighted to receive a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2019, an accolade they have retained every year since.
The restaurant seats 80 guests and overlooks the stunning harbour, with a menu that reflects the town’s fishing heritage and a commitment to local, seasonal produce. The cooking is built around an abundance of sustainable fish dishes. Using the freshest day-boat fish from Looe market, just opposite the restaurant, the kitchen keeps things simple and fresh, letting the ingredients speak for themselves. This is modern coastal cuisine rooted in Cornwall, with a clear seafood focus.
The ethos is seasonally sourced and locally made. While the menus change with the catch, the approach remains consistent: straightforward, high-quality seafood prepared with respect. Whether you visit for a light lunch, dinner with friends, or a celebration, the atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious. The Sardine Factory’s Bib Gourmand recognition underscores the value of this cooking – good quality, good value, and deeply connected to its place.
