The story

The Belgian Arms, Maidenhead: Modern British Gastropub and Local Gem

The Belgian Arms in Maidenhead functions as a modern British gastropub serving seasonal dishes beside the village green.

History and Setting

Originally known as The Eagle, the building changed its name during the First World War to honour local residents who served in Belgium. This 200-year-old structure retains a bare-boarded interior and a laid-back character suited to a community hub. Roaring log fires anchor the dining room during colder months, while the garden provides seating near the village pond under willow trees. The atmosphere blends calm hospitality with the steady pace of a village pub.

Seasonal Cooking and Dishes

The kitchen follows an understated philosophy where quality emerges from simplicity and traditional techniques. Menus rotate four times a year to keep flavours clean and ingredients local, grounding the modern British cooking in what is available. The Good Food Guide recognises the restaurant as a Local Gem, praising Sunday roasts for their incredibly succulent pork sourced from a nearby farm. Lunch and evening services offer adventurous plates alongside pub classics. Standout desserts include a cheesy Heckfield Cheddar soufflé with Parmesan cream sauce, and a wonderfully wobbly panna cotta paired with warm flapjack and zesty sloe compôte.

Wines and Drinks

The beverage programme complements the food, with reviewers noting the wines are a cut above the average pub selection. The list covers sparkling options like Cottonworth English and Champagne Laurent-Perrier, moving to reds such as Château Rauzan-Ségla and Ridge Geyserville. Pours and bottles span regions from South Africa to Bordeaux, designed to suit all tastes and budgets. The drink offering shifts to align with the seasonal direction of the kitchen.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Just off Holyport's handsome green, this laid-back, bare-boarded 200-year-old pub has many loyal fans who praise the open fire, the garden near the village pond and the welcoming, well-practised staff, as well as the Sunday roasts – especially the ‘incredibly succulent’ pork from a local farm. During the rest of the week, a brief menu of pub classics is served throughout the day, with more adventurous cooking coming into play at lunchtime and after 6pm. Results can vary, but a cheesy Heckfield Cheddar soufflé with Parmesan cream sauce and a wonderfully wobbly panna cotta with warm flapjack and zesty sloe compôte showcase the kitchen’s capabilities. Wines are a cut above, too.
