The story

Half Dozen Other Manchester: Award-Winning Bakehouse in Cheetham Hill

Baking Philosophy and Ingredients

Half Dozen Other anchors its baking philosophy in a dedicated Cheetham Hill workshop. The kitchen avoids all chemical improvers and preservatives. Staff combine organic flour from Shipton Mill with fine cultured butter from Normandy. Every item takes shape by hand. This commitment to ingredient purity defines the Manchester bakery's approach to bread and pastry.

Signature Pastries and Bread

The bakehouse highlights hand-laminated croissants made with the imported butter. Tangy sourdough loaves develop flavour through long fermentation. Visitors often seek out the burnished cinnamon buns or the distinctive almond-cream croissant sculpted into the shape of a bear's paw. Belgian chocolate and cocoa appear in sweet preparations. These treats balance richness with the clean taste of the house-made dough.

A Destination Worth the Detour

Situated between a railway arch and an open car park, the Red Bank unit presents itself as a modest brick structure. The building lacks a polished storefront. This post-industrial setting has earned the venue a Local Gem award from The Good Food Guide. Readers appreciate finding such quality from a dedicated bakery away from the usual high streets. Customers can also visit the Circle Square outlet on Oxford Road. This site serves sandwiches and hot savouries. The group extends further with sister spots at Pot Kettle Black cafés across the city.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Despite the clunky name and unprepossessing post-industrial location (sandwiched between an open car park and railway arches on the edge of town), this brick-coloured shed-like bakery nonetheless attracts a steady stream of customers. Although the buttery hand-laminated croissants, funky flaky pastries, burnished cinnamon buns and tangy sourdough can be sampled in their city-centre premises at Circle Square on Oxford Road (which also serves sandwiches and hot savoury items), there’s a wee thrill in navigating your way off the beaten track to the bakehouse itself. Reward yourself with an excellent coffee and an almond-cream croissant shaped like a bear’s paw. You can also sample HDO's wares at their Pot Kettle Black cafés dotted across the city.
