The story

La Chouquette Didsbury: Artisan French Bakery in Manchester

A Didsbury staple built on quiet consistency

La Chouquette Didsbury functions as a steadfast French bakery in Manchester. Customers form orderly lines before sunrise at the Wilmslow Road location. A large glass window showcases the day’s production, allowing visitors to select their items without stepping inside. This straightforward approach has earned recognition as a Local Gem in the 2026 Good Food Guide.

Handcrafted pastries and everyday breads

Golden sponge madeleines arrive alongside perfectly laminated croissants that retain a moist texture throughout the crumb. Almond varieties feature a noticeable nutty richness without excessive sweetness. Crisp baguettes and slow fermented sourdough loaves anchor the daily selection. Every batch of small choux pastry puffs carries a coating of pearl sugar that catches the light.

Extended patisserie and café offerings

Display cases hold an assortment of French gâteaux and delicate confections alongside the morning breads. The kitchen maintains precise temperature control for every proofing stage. Freshly roasted beans support the sweet and savory selections. Regular visitors typically depart with several glossy treats rather than a single purchase.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Since opening in Didsbury, this tiny artisan bakery has built a loyal following – especially for its golden sponge madeleines, perfectly laminated croissants (including the moist, nutty almond ones), crisp baguettes, sourdough breads and a wide range of French patisserie and gâteaux. A big window at the front displays all the goods so you can choose before entering, but you’ll inevitably come away with a few glossy, hollow chouquettes (small choux pastry puffs sprinkled with pearl sugar). They serve good coffee too. There's a sibling in Poynton with a few seats outside, and an unassuming takeaway outlet called Piqniq (sandwiches, pastries and salads, but no bread) on School Lane, Didsbury. Expect long queues on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
