Craig’s Bakehouse

Christopher and Ruth Laing rebuilt this North Yorkshire spot into a celebrated Local Gem, focusing on house-made bakes, light fare, and locally roasted coffee.

The story

Craig’s Bakehouse Marske-by-the-Sea Artisan Pastries and Coastal Café

The Founders and a Fresh Direction

Craig’s Bakehouse occupies a steady presence on High Street in Marske-by-the-Sea, anchoring the coastal community with a steadfast commitment to artisan baking. Christopher and Ruth Laing acquired the premises in 2018 and watched the wider industry shift around them. Rather than compromise their standards during uncertain years, the couple stripped back the operation and launched a dedicated pastry kitchen. This pivot earned them a Local Gem designation in the 2026 Good Food Guide, recognizing a business that prioritizes quality ingredients and staff wellbeing above all else.

Signature Bakes and Light Fare

The display counter features a rotating selection of croissants, cinnamon Danish pastries, blondies, and Victoria sponges. Guests frequently order the sausage and bacon sourdough sandwich for a quick morning meal before moving on to sweet treats like a bakehouse-style tiramisu or rum-soaked tiffin squares. Hot drinks come directly from Rounton Roasters, providing a smooth local roast to pair with the buttery pastries. Even the savory brunch options rely on fresh components, including free-range poached eggs served alongside spiced tomato bakes or scrambled tofu with nori seasoning.

A Coastal Gathering Space

Located in a quiet stretch of Marske-by-the-Sea, the café welcomes visitors seeking a relaxed pace away from busy streets. Staff members guide customers through the ever-changing menu while maintaining a warm, unpretentious environment. The layout encourages both casual takeaway orders and seated conversations over locally roasted coffee. It functions exactly as the Good Food Guide describes, operating as a reliable neighborhood asset that adapts gracefully to seasonal rhythms.

2026
The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Following a change of tack in 2024, Christopher and Ruth Laing re-branded what was Craig's by the Sea, expanded their bakery, removed their service kitchen and put the focus firmly on home-baked breads, cakes and pastries, plus a limited ‘light food’ menu for walk-ins. Order a sausage and bacon sourdough sarnie for breakfast or sit down with one of their sweet bakes and a cup of coffee from locally based Rounton Roasters. The ever-changing line-up ranges from croissants, cinnamon Danish pastries, blondies and Victoria sponges to a bakehouse take on tiramisu and biscuity tiffin squares with rum-soaked raisins. Warm, friendly staff also help to make Craig’s a ‘real asset to the village.’
