The story

The Packhorse Inn, Moulton – Modern Cuisine Michelin Recommended Pub

The Packhorse Inn, Moulton

At the centre of Moulton, on the edge of the village green, The Packhorse Inn is a traditional pub shaped by its kitchen and part of everyday village life. Menus follow the seasons with a focus on local producers and the best of the region. This commitment to simple, high-quality cooking has earned the inn a Michelin Recommended award, a fitting nod to its place among the best dining pubs in Suffolk.

The kitchen works closely with regional growers and coastal suppliers. Game comes in season, fish arrives from the coast, and vegetables are served at their peak. The result is modern cuisine that feels grounded and honest. Starters might include Cromer crab on toast or a Scotch egg with burnt apple ketchup. Mains range from a Packhorse fish and chips with smoked haddock to a Hereford rib of beef for the table. The menu changes regularly, but the approach stays the same: let the ingredients speak.

Regular Events and the Cellar

The Packhorse Inn’s calendar reflects its kitchen-driven ethos. The last Friday of each month brings Butcher’s Best, where one half of a Suffolk cow is prepared in-house and served as a menu of premium cuts like ribeye and picanha. The second Friday is Fisherman’s Catch, a changing seafood menu shaped by trusted coastal suppliers, with dishes such as hand-dived scallops and dressed crab.

Behind the bar, the wine list balances easy-drinking bottles with finds from smaller producers. A Black Book offers standout vintages and rare picks, while well-kept beers and a considered spirits selection round things out.

A Place to Stay and Explore

Sixteen bedrooms are spread across the pub, courtyard and barn. Each room combines thoughtful design with simple comforts, from good mattresses to Connock England amenities. Dogs are welcome, making it an easy place to settle in for a night or two. The inn is just a couple of miles from Newmarket, the home of British horse racing, and surrounded by the landscapes of Constable Country, offering plenty of walks that end back at the pub.

Pristine inside and out, this bullishly revitalised village inn overlooking Moulton’s handsome green has year-round appeal as a weekending and dining destination but, with real ales and a proper bar, it's popular with drinkers too. The more luxe element of the package is confined to the letting rooms (and the cars in the car park on our visit), while the light-filled, raftered restaurant speaks of a charmingly relaxed dining room, complete with warm, attentive service. There’s also a garden terrace for summertime dining. The cooking is similarly straightforward, with the kitchen matching pub classics – Scotch egg with brown sauce, burgers, steak and chips – with seasonally fresh dishes with an international focus, say crispy Blackface lamb shoulder with English peas and broad beans, mint and labneh or a roasted courgette risotto with pesto, sunflower seed and basil. On a glowing late spring evening, BBQ poussin with paprika, tabbouleh, yoghurt and sumac, and a dish of cod served with a tangle of mussels, buttered potatoes and greens in a lemon and Champagne cream sauce both proved palpable hits – as did the elderflower panna cotta with Essex strawberries, which we shared for dessert. The wine list is wide-ranging, listed by style, and offers a good selection by the glass.
