The story

A Tavola Gastronomia Siciliana, New Mills | Authentic Sicilian Cooking

The chef and his kitchen

A Tavola Gastronomia Siciliana in New Mills anchors its menus on traditional Sicilian cooking brought by chef Alessio Muccio. This marks his third independent venture, where he treats every dish as a direct translation of island street food. He imports Sasizza fennel sausage, cured meats, and extra virgin olive oil straight from Sicily to pair with seasonal produce from local Derbyshire farms. His hands-on philosophy recently earned a recommendation from The Good Food Guide, which specifically praised how the bright interiors and curated decor mimic a genuine family kitchen.

Ingredients and signature plates

The kitchen rolls fresh casarecce pasta daily, tossing it into creamy pistachio sauce or pairing it with chargrilled spring onions wrapped in guanciale. Street food staples like sfincione appear alongside spiced local lamb that borrows heavily from island spice blends. Every component arrives at the pass prepared on site, including house-made gelato and ricotta stuffed choux buns for dessert. The menu shifts with British seasons while keeping core Italian culinary traditions firmly intact.

The dining room and surroundings

Sunshine yellow walls frame a compact space decorated with genuine Sicilian artefacts collected over years of travel. Two heated outdoor tables sit just outside the Albion Road entrance, welcoming guests when the weather clears. The layout remains intentionally small, encouraging quiet conversation between passes of homemade bread and seasonal specials. Guests often finish their meals with complimentary Swizzels sweets delivered with the final check.

The Good Food Guide — Good

It may be squirrelled away in the little Derbyshire town of New Mills, surrounded by the rugged High Peaks, but Tavola’s ‘welcoming atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve walked into a Sicilian home’. Locals have certainly taken the place to their hearts and the owners have responded, drenching the interior in sunshine-yellow and filling every corner with Sicilian knick-knacks. Ring the bell for admittance and surrender to the unusual comfort of a huge regional menu full of appetising possibilities. Antipasti range from fingers of sfincione (Sicilian pizza) to mangia e bevi (another street-food classic from Palermo involving chargrilled spring onions wrapped in guanciale with salmoriglio). Pasta is homemade too – perhaps twisted casarecce with a creamy pistachio sauce. Locally reared lamb is also given a spicy Sicilian makeover, while desserts including crisp, ricotta-stuffed 'bigne' choux buns show off solid pastry skills. Drinks run from Italian ciders to soft spritzes and natural wines made in terracotta pots, but you'll always know you're in New Mills: the bill comes with a selection of sweets from the neighbouring Swizzels factory.
