The story
Cantina brings a vibrant slice of contemporary Mexican to Newcastle upon Tyne, transforming a series of early pop-ups into a permanent neighbourhood home on Heaton Park Road. The owners launched their career as musicians before opening their first bricks-and-mortar site, bringing that same collaborative energy to the dining room. Inspired by favourite hangouts in Mexico City, the space features terracotta-painted walls, plain wooden tables, and modern art that complements the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Walk-ins are always welcome for drinks and food in this compact venue.
The kitchen applies a distinct plant-based spin to core repertoire dishes, beginning with homemade totopos and zingy palate-cleansing pickles. Small cravings span from elote grilled corn cobs dressed with habanero and shallot butter to an outstanding rendition of tempura cauliflower topped with sunflower seeds, fried sage leaves, and a touch of chilli. Sharing plates showcase imagination, including a baja taco built around beer-battered banana blossoms and morita chilli sauce, or a version featuring panko-coated fried oyster mushrooms with pickled fennel and chipotle black beans.
Desserts offer two focused options, starting with a silky-smooth chocolate mousse finished with iodised sea salt crystals and chocolate crumb. A second course combines rice pudding and crème brûlée textures, giving the dish an extra kick through the addition of cherry and mezcal. The beverage programme supports the bold seasoning across the menu with tempting cocktails that lead the drinks list, alongside a curated selection of mezcal, beer, and wine.
