The story

Lubber Kitchen in Newcastle Upon Tyne | Modern European Dining

A grounded start to the evening

Lubber Kitchen in Newcastle upon Tyne serves modern European dishes that shift with the calendar. The Good Food Guide recently recognised this compact spot for its consistent quality and generous portions. Stainless steel tables and an open kitchen frame a busy dining room where guests gather early for afternoon bites or stay late for dinner. Every plate follows a straightforward philosophy centred on quality vegetables, sustainable fish, and house ferments.

Seasonal plates built for sharing

The kitchen applies European-inspired cooking to seasonal produce, preparing considered small plates designed for family style dining. Weekend menus often feature whipped cod’s roe alongside crisp radicchio and baby gem leaves. You might also encounter glazed ox heart resting in a rich butter bean stew or pan fried pollack paired with roasted peppers and spinach. All ingredients move through the pass quickly, supported by a rotating selection of pickles that cut through richer preparations.

Community focus behind the counter

Located just downstairs from the main venue, the space balances a buzzing atmosphere with quieter corner seats near the chef’s bar. Natural wines and locally brewed beers sit alongside foraged infusions and specialty coffee throughout the day. Staff serve meals with a relaxed warmth that matches the room’s unpretentious layout. Profits from every ticket return directly to Slack’s Radio, keeping local music broadcasts running daily.

The Good Food Guide — Good

An industrial-style café (stainless steel tables, open kitchen, polished concrete) that punches well above its weight, with a good-value set lunch, well-filled sandwiches, daily specials (glazed ox heart and butter bean stew), coffee and cake. From Thursday through to Saturday evening, it also excels with a terrific six-course set menu that whisks diners (rather too swiftly) through a series of imaginative, seasonal courses that might begin with whipped cod’s roe, radicchio, baby gem and radish, then, perhaps, pollack with peppers, spinach and aïoli. Tables are so closely packed you may make friends with your neighbours, but that's all part of this friendly buzzing and resourceful place, which is everything you could ask of a little local restaurant. Lubber Fiend, its relation next door, is a vibrant community events venue. Wines are limited to a house red and white, rosé and fizz, plus cocktails. Should you be wondering about the name, a Lubber Fiend is a mythical, clumsy household spirit. Happily, there's nothing clumsy about the Lubber Kitchen.
