The story
Six sits on the top floor of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, a former flour mill transformed into a cultural landmark. From its rooftop perch, the restaurant overlooks the River Tyne and the vibrant Quayside of Newcastle. The setting is both elegant and welcoming – a spacious, refined dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the city skyline.
The restaurant reopened in March 2024 after a complete refurbishment under new ownership by Pneuma Hospitality Group. The redesign created a sleek, comfortable space that balances contemporary sophistication with a relaxed atmosphere. Guests arrive via panoramic glass lifts, entering a world where art, culture, and fine dining converge.
The kitchen is led by food director Greg Lambert, whose menus emphasise creativity while staying rooted in seasonal, local produce. Sustainability is a core principle. The à la carte and tasting menus change regularly to reflect what is freshest from the North East.
Diners can choose from several experiences. The ‘Taste of SIX’ tasting menu is available in Land & Sea or Plant formats, offering six or nine courses. For a more relaxed meal, the prix fixe menu is served at lunch and early evening. The Chef’s Table seats up to six guests directly in the kitchen, providing a private view of the culinary team at work. The Viewing Box and bar area offers smaller plates and snacks, ideal for cocktails and casual dining.
Dishes showcase refined technique and bold flavours. Starters might include cured Chalk Stream trout with olive and chilli salsa, or chicken liver parfait with truffle brioche. Mains range from pan-roast halibut to slow-cooked beef blade, with a grill section featuring Dexter beef cuts. Desserts such as dark chocolate mousse with salted caramel and sticky toffee pudding with black tea ice cream round out the meal.
Six holds a Michelin Recommended award and two AA Rosettes, reflecting its consistent quality and attention to detail. The restaurant’s commitment to accessible fine dining means the experience is polished yet unpretentious, with a close-knit team focused on personal service.
Whether for a celebratory tasting menu or a Sunday lunch with a refined twist on the traditional roast, Six offers a memorable meal in one of the North East’s most striking settings. The combination of inventive modern cuisine, panoramic views, and a warm, professional atmosphere makes it a destination for locals and visitors alike.
