The story

Tough Mary’s Bakehouse Nottingham | Award-Winning Local Bakery & Patisserie

The Pastry Kitchen

Tough Mary’s Bakehouse in Nottingham has established itself as a dependable neighbourhood bakery since opening on Derby Road. Behind the bright yellow shopfront, bakers shape dough by hand throughout the morning hours. The kitchen operates strictly from Tuesday to Saturday, which allows staff to maintain consistent fermentation times for their flatbreads and laminated doughs. Customers can secure Friday and Saturday collections through an online pre-order system.

Signature Breads and Sweets

The pastry kitchen display cases feature seeded country sourdough loaves priced from three pounds twenty pence, alongside almond croissants and seasonal Danish pastries. Pain au chocolat draws particular attention for its crisp, flaky layers and rich filling. Whole cakes include Basque cheesecake at twenty four pounds, while smaller treats like babka and Swedish semla buns rotate with the seasons. Savoury options such as cheese and mustard scones and mini pizzas provide a practical midday alternative.

The Derby Road Shopfront

Regular patrons recognize this bread shop as a convenient stop for students and evening visitors navigating the city centre. The counter displays freshly baked bagels that pair well with drip coffee or herbal tea. Recognition from The Good Food Guide as a Local Gem reflects how consistently the team delivers quality without unnecessary fuss. Visitors simply need to arrive early, since the limited morning inventory sells out quickly.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

The sight of bakers beavering away behind Tough Mary’s bright yellow shopfront will be familiar to Nottingham's night-owl students and clubbers – in fact the place is now something of a local landmark on Derby Road. Seeded sourdough loaves and beautifully textured pain au chocolat (almost as sublime as the version sold in House of Pain in Marseilles) are top calls, along with almond croissants, seasonal Danish pastries, blondies and more eclectic ideas including Basque cheesecake, babka and Swedish semla buns. There are also savouries galore (sandwiches, cheese and mustard scones, mini pizzas etc), and TM’s bagels are irresistible too – especially with a ‘drip’ coffee or herbal tea. Just be sure to get there early.
