The story
On the grounds of Moor Hall, just outside Ormskirk, The Barn is a relaxed, Michelin-starred restaurant that shares its sibling’s deep respect for produce. Chef Patron Mark Birchall, a champion of Lancashire’s farmers and artisans, leads a kitchen that turns the best seasonal ingredients into clear, confident Modern British cooking.
The space is an elegant conversion—timeless, generously spaced, with a modern twist. Large windows frame views over the lake and towards the Hall, while the atmosphere stays informal and welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in for a long lunch or a proper Sunday roast.
The menu changes with the seasons, drawing heavily from Moor Hall’s own five-acre gardens and trusted local suppliers. Dishes are simpler here than at the three-star main house, but no less precise. You might find 60-day aged grass-fed ex-dairy Jersey beef tartare with Jerusalem artichoke and nasturtium, or Cornish cod with smoked onion, charred leek and bacon crumb. A stem ginger panna cotta with blood orange and granola might finish the meal.
The Barn holds one Michelin Star, a recognition of its consistent, high-quality cooking. It’s a neighbourhood restaurant in the truest sense—one that happens to be exceptional.
