The story
Opened in 2016 by Ben, Rufus & Ben, Arbequina is an independent tapas bar and restaurant on Oxford’s Cowley Road. The idea was straightforward: create tapas-style sharing dishes built on explosive, well-married flavours from Spain and beyond. The focus, from the start, has been on quality, unique and well-sourced ingredients.
The restaurant’s long, zinc bar quickly became a favourite with locals looking for great food in an exciting, buzzy atmosphere. In 2021, Arbequina expanded into the space next door at number 72, adding hand-crafted cocktails and a curated selection of natural wines to the experience.
The recognition followed. Arbequina now holds a Michelin Recommendation, a nod to its consistent delivery of short-but-sublime menus that have drawn praise from critics including Marina O’Loughlin of The Guardian and Time Out Magazine.
The menu changes regularly, but the approach remains constant: Spanish cuisine that is direct, flavourful and ingredient-led. You might find a perfect tortilla, or the chocolate salami that O’Loughlin described as worth signing up for. The kitchen is open for service Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday lunch through to dinner, with a short break in the afternoon.
The bar pours natural wines and cocktails that complement the food, and the atmosphere stays lively throughout. There are walk-in spaces available, and a private dining area for up to 20 guests.
Arbequina sits at 72-74 Cowley Road, under the restored Victorian ‘RA Neville Dispensing Chemist’ sign uncovered by the team. The space is relaxed but polished, with counter dining at the bar and tables for groups. It is a place for honest fun, wonderful products and great service – no fluff, just good Spanish cooking in the heart of Oxford.
