The story
The Magdalen Arms in Oxford has evolved into a dynamic dining pub where Modern European cooking meets genuine hospitality. The open kitchen projects warmth directly onto the floor, allowing guests to watch staff serve generously laden plates with enthusiastic energy. Freshly baked focaccia defines the aroma, a product that also anchors the on-site shop emporium stocked with house-made preserves, dry pastas, and imported olive oils. This dual focus on immediate service and local retail reflects a relaxed approach to gastropub culture that values quality ingredients over pretence. Since opening in October 2014, the venue maintains rock-steady technique while keeping prices fair and portions satisfying.
Menu highlights include slow-cooked neck of lamb shared among three diners, accompanied by excellent dauphinoise potatoes and spiced red cabbage. Fish courses arrive with equal confidence, such as whole sea bass flashed on the grill and dressed with cime di rapa, garlic, and chilli. Starters offer crisp texture with pig's cheek served with gribiche, or a four-cheese soufflé that undergoes a twice-baked process to ensure a perfect rise. Desserts rotate between seasonal classics like greengage crumble and bramble Bakewell, alongside richly fashioned cheesecakes and simple sorbets.
Inside, the dining room feels expansive and cheerful, maintaining a warm energy throughout the service. Partially sheltered outdoor tables offer a spot for al fresco meals, though availability depends on the weather and operates on a first-come basis. Well-behaved dogs are permitted inside as long as they remain under the table. The kitchen supports a daily a la carte menu alongside set lunch and supper hours, ensuring consistent value for visitors. Sunday roasts launch at midday and sell through rapidly. The bar serves well-kept ales and a concise wine list featuring selections like a Gassac Viognier-Chardonnay blend.
