The story
In the pretty Oxfordshire village of Fyfield, a lovingly restored 15th-century hostelry serves some of the county’s most accomplished Modern British food. Husband-and-wife team Mark and Kay Chandler have run the White Hart since 2005, and their focus on quality, provenance, and sustainability has earned them a Michelin Recommended status for 2026.
The kitchen, led by Mark, prepares everything fresh on the premises every day—bread, pasta, ice creams, even the horseradish sauce for Sunday roasts. The ethos is built on local sourcing: a kitchen garden provides produce picked just hours before it reaches the plate, while local woodlands and hedgerows contribute wild garlic, mushrooms, blackberries, and elderflowers. The team has held two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence for nineteen years, a testament to consistent, thoughtful cooking.
The setting matches the ambition. The building’s history is palpable, but the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. In warmer months, an outdoor wood-fired kitchen turns out artisan sourdough pizzas, served on a terrace with pergolas and heat lamps. Inside, the dining rooms are split over different levels, adding to the charm.
The Chandlers’ approach has not gone unnoticed. The White Hart was named “The One to Watch” in the Estrella Top 50 Gastropubs and has been voted one of the top 50 pubs in England by The Independent and Sawday’s. The Good Food Guide also named it for the Best Sunday Roast. The wine list, personally selected by Kay, features over 60 bottles with a focus on independent, small vineyards, while the bar stocks a rotating selection of cask ales from local breweries.
Whether for a set lunch, a celebratory dinner, or a relaxed pizza and a drink, the White Hart delivers on its promise of serious food in a genuinely welcoming space.
