The story
Allium, the Michelin-starred restaurant at Askham Hall, offers a refined dining experience set within a historic country house in the Cumbrian countryside near Penrith. The restaurant serves a six-course Tasting Menu that showcases the best of Modern British cooking, with a focus on high-quality ingredients and precise technique.
The kitchen is led by chef Richard Swale and his Michelin-starred team, who craft a menu that changes with the seasons. The tasting menu is priced at £140 per person, with an optional wine pairing at £110 per person, curated by in-house sommelier Nico. The wine list itself is a point of pride, with special events like the Mid-Summer Wine Escape celebrating English and French wines.
Allium welcomes both residents of Askham Hall and non-resident diners, as well as guests staying at nearby sister pubs, The Queen’s Head and the George and Dragon. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6.45pm, with bookings taken between 6.45pm and 8pm. For larger parties of six or more from May to July, a special dining offer is available at £100 per person, including a bottle of Champagne.
The atmosphere at Allium is one of understated elegance, reflecting its setting within a historic estate. The restaurant’s Michelin star—awarded for high-quality cooking—is a testament to the team’s dedication, but the experience here is welcoming and unpretentious. Note that the kitchen cannot cater for severe lactose allergies, dairy-free, or vegan diets due to the nature of the cooking, so guests with other dietary requirements are asked to inform the team at the time of booking.
Whether you are exploring the Lake District or seeking a destination meal, Allium at Askham Hall delivers a memorable taste of Modern British cuisine in a truly distinctive setting.
