The story

2 Fore Street Penzance: Modern British Dining by Mousehole Harbour

The Kitchen and Local Sourcing

Perched on Mousehole harbour within Penzance, 2 Fore Street offers classically grounded modern British dining with a focus on local Cornish produce. This Good Food Guide recognised bistro balances Raymond Blanc training with a relaxed seaside charm, serving confident seafood and seasonal plates overlooking Mount's Bay.

Joe Wardell brings a period of training under Raymond Blanc to the kitchen, applying that classical discipline to ingredients sourced daily from local suppliers. He mentors apprentices and maintains a hands-on presence, ensuring every plate reflects careful flavour balance rather than heavy technique. The menu shifts regularly to honour the freshest catch and harvest, keeping the offering sharp and responsive to the season.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Highlights

Guests frequently return for the Newlyn crab twice baked parmesan soufflé, a dish celebrated for its rich texture and consistent quality across repeat visits. The signature fish pie arrives topped with pangrattato for crunch, while shell roasted scallops feature lobster garlic butter paired with sourdough herb crumb. Starters like newlyn crab soup with saffron rouille offer immediate savoury depth, complemented by whole shell on prawns dressed with chilli and samphire.

Harbour Views and Secluded Garden

The dining space sits at right angles to the harbour, capturing light across Mount's Bay through windows that frame the active waterfront. Weathered floorboards and undressed tables create a homely backdrop, while a secluded garden provides a quiet spot for long summer lunches. Kerry, a Mousehole native, leads the front-of-house team with an emphasis on seamless attention to detail, ensuring the service feels as natural as the setting.

The Good Food Guide — Good

There's an appealing homely feel to Joe Wardell's welcoming bistro, which sits among stone cottages by Mousehole harbour. Weathered floorboards, foursquare undressed tables and a tiny terrace for clement weather are the setting for confident seafood cookery and more besides. Wardell did a period of training with Raymond Blanc, which accounts for the carefully considered balance of flavours in dishes that might otherwise sound perfectly familiar. Newlyn crab soup with rouille and Parmesan toast is full of savoury intensity, or consider a bowl of mussels to get you started, comfortingly served in cream with garlic and rosemary. The house fish pie topped with pangrattato is a signature dish worth travelling for, or there could be scallops roasted in their shells, dressed in curried lime butter, with contrasting textures of parsnip purée and crispy shallots. If you're not a devotee of the sea, go for something like thyme-roasted chicken breast with smoked bacon and lemony pea risotto. Rhubarb and custard pavlova with white-chocolate crumble makes an interesting change for afters, if you can tear yourself away from the sticky toffee pudding. Hearty breakfasts are a draw, and there is also a coastal apartment, the Boatwatch, overlooking the harbour for longer visits.
