The story

Argoe Restaurant Newlyn | Seasonal Cornish Seafood & Natural Wine

Heritage and the kitchen

Argoe anchors a spot on The Strand in Newlyn, delivering seasonal British seafood and natural wine overlooking the harbour. Recognised by The Good Food Guide for its dedication to fresh catch, the restaurant stands as a tribute to Newlyn's fishing heritage dating back to the 1500s. The kitchen draws inspiration from coastal cookery across Europe, favouring simple preparations that highlight the quality of local fishermen and growers. Whole fish take centre stage over a charcoal grill, cooked in the humble tradition of harbourside eateries where the catch dictates the menu. Every dish is designed to be shared, echoing the communal spirit of the port town.

Seasonal British seafood

The menus rotate with the seasons and the daily catch from Mount's Bay. Appetisers might feature marinated octopus or home-smoked cod's roe paired with sharp gherkins. Main courses showcase the depth of the region's waters, highlighting the best of Cornish fish with dishes like braised ray meat formed into balls with saffron onions or a whole megrim sole grilled simply with brown butter and lemon. Grilled lobster arrives dressed in herb butter, while winter shifts bring smoked hake with white beans and hand-dived scallops. Vegetable dishes like roast carrots with pickled walnut and soft boiled egg offer creative alternatives alongside the abundant shellfish and fish. Desserts remain uncomplicated yet memorable, ranging from rhubarb pavlova to clementine sorbet spiked with vodka.

The room and drinks

Argoe overlooks the harbour, embracing the functional beauty of a working port instead of a curated aesthetic. The space mirrors the town's industrious character, placing the connection to the sea at the heart of the visit. A natural wine list runs parallel to the menu, featuring low-intervention selections like a pét-nat Beaujolais rosé and skin-contact German Riesling. These bottles are chosen to resonate with the coastal regions shaping the dishes.

The Good Food Guide — Good

There's no more appetising way to eat fresh seafood than overlooking a harbour, with a busy fish market close by. Such is the scene at Argoe, which is perched above Mount's Bay at Newlyn. Classic European ways inform the menus, which might kick off with an appetiser of marinated octopus or deeply flavoured home-smoked cod's roe offset by sharp gherkins. Summer visitors were mightily pleased with their crab, green beans and tomatoes, as well as 'meaty’ balls of minced and braised ray with saffron onions. A whole megrim sole straight from the grill provides a world of ozone-scented satisfaction, dressed in nothing more than browned butter and lemon (‘a faultless piece of fish cookery’), while grilled lobsters (‘deliciously fresh and rich’) are reckoned to be particularly good value, simply doused in herb butter. A winter menu might feature smoked hake with white beans and leeks, with hand-dived scallops, sardines and black bream being given the grill treatment. There are also a few creative veggie alternatives too – perhaps  roast carrots with pickled walnut and a soft boiled egg. Desserts are simple but far from a mere afterthought, taking in the likes of rhubarb pavlova or clementine sorbet blasted with vodka. A short list of constantly changing but quite pricey low-intervention wines has included a pét-nat version of Beaujolais rosé and a skin-contact German Riesling.
