The story
A historic maritime pub built in 1717, The Tolcarne Inn sits beside the sea wall in Newlyn Harbour, one of Britain’s most important fishing ports. Chef and restaurateur Ben Tunnicliffe runs the kitchen here, drawing on three decades of experience to create a seafood menu that changes with the seasons. The chalkboard reflects whatever has come in fresh from the boats—Ben is licensed to buy direct from the fishermen, and the pub also sources from Newlyn Fish Market. This direct connection to the catch is central to the kitchen’s ethos: combine flavours simply and instinctively, and let the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves.
Head Chef Matt Smith works alongside Ben, having previously led kitchens at The Gurnard’s Head and The Old Coastguard. Together they keep the cooking unfussy and focused. A small-plates menu now runs alongside the main offering, encouraging diners to build their own feast. The wine list is designed to enhance the seafood, and local ales and ciders are always on hand.
The Tolcarne Inn has earned a Michelin recommendation, a recognition that feels earned rather than chased. The setting is relaxed—a proper pub with a friendly welcome, where the food is serious but the atmosphere is not. The building has weathered storms and centuries, and its Grade II Listed status protects its character. Dogs are welcome, children are catered for, and the bar stays open between services.
This is British seafood cooking at its most direct: fresh fish from right next door, served in a place that has been feeding Newlyn for over 300 years.
