The story

The Dory Bistro & Gallery – Fresh Seafood in Pittenweem, Fife

On the harbourside of Pittenweem, one of Scotland’s most important shellfish ports, The Dory Bistro & Gallery has been serving fresh seafood since 2018. Lobsters, langoustines and crabs are landed less than 40 metres from the front door, while fish comes from nearby St Monans and Pittenweem. The kitchen also draws on wild game from Fife estates and offers meat and vegetarian dishes, always reflecting the seasonal rhythms of the region.

The restaurant’s commitment to local, sustainable produce has earned it a Michelin Recommended status. Its menus change with what’s available from suppliers such as East Neuk Market Garden, East Neuk Kilnhouse, and Penman’s Butchers in Crail, supplemented by herbs, vegetables, salads and fruit from the restaurant’s own expanding kitchen garden. A daily specials board adds a handful of extra starters and mains each day.

What sets The Dory apart is its integrated art gallery. The walls are filled with work by some of Scotland’s top artists, including co-owner Malcolm Cheape, a successful maritime painter. Paintings, prints, ceramics and jewellery are all available to browse and buy while you dine, giving the space a relaxed, gallery-like atmosphere.

The wine list, curated with Graeme Broom of Wine Importers Ltd, spans France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Germany and beyond, with an interesting range of aperitifs, sherries and dessert wines. Local breweries Ovenstone 109 and Loch Leven Brewery also feature on the drinks menu.

With its harbour views, unfussy cooking and honest hospitality, The Dory Bistro & Gallery is a true taste of Fife’s coastline.

The Good Food Guide — Good

With prime raw materials harvested from the day-boats less than 40 metres from its front door, the laid-back Dory Bistro ensures that Pittenweem is amply supplied with ‘classy food all year round’. Ruth Robinson's kitchen teems with Cumbrae oysters, lobsters, crabs, langoustines and locally landed fish – not to mention garden pickings and game from nearby estates – and there’s an art gallery to wander around while you work up an appetite. The regular menu makes all kinds of classic moves, culminating in the ‘catch of the day’ served with seaweed and sorrel beurre blanc. The kitchen’s clean, classic style (‘with a touch of adventure’) also shows in desserts such as a layered vanilla and miso ice cream with miso pearls. Visitors applaud the specials board too – particularly as it also features ‘the most amazing aperitifs’. As for wine, expect plenty of on-trend varietal whites to match the fish-friendly menu. Wonderfully friendly local staff add to the pleasure of eating at this harbourfront gem.
